Elliot Anderson named in Scotland squad to face Cyprus and England

Steve Clarke has named former England youth international Elliot Anderson in his squad for games against Cyprus and Gareth Southgate’s side.

The Newcastle midfielder has represented both Scotland and England at youth level and has recently turned down call-ups to Scot Gemmill’s Under-21 squad while he considered his international future.

The 20-year-old has played one under-21 international for Scotland, against Belgium in June 2022.

Casemiro cites Madrid team-mates Modric and Kroos as world´s best midfielders

Casemiro has crowned team-mates Luka Modric and Toni Kroos as possibly the best two midfielders in the world .

Madrid ran out 2-0 winners over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Super Cup on Wednesday, thanks to goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema.

Carlo Ancelotti stuck with the same line-up that had started against Liverpool in May s Champions League final, and midfield trio Casemiro, Kroos and Modric turned in a supreme display.

Modric, the 2018 Ballon d Or winner, completed 53 of 57 passes (93 per cent) and laid on two chances for team-mates in Helsinki, while Kroos enjoyed 120 touches, completed 97 passes and gained possession nine times.

Only UEFA s man of the match Casemiro (10) bettered that latter figure, and the Brazil international also went clos…

The Numbers Game: Barcelona´s barren run as Real Sociedad enjoy recovery

A disappointing opening weekend for Barcelona saw Xavi s men held to a goalless draw against Rayo Vallecano at Camp Nou, with plenty to improve upon.

Having seen the transfer window dominated by discussions around the club s transfer additions and the battle to get them registered in time, there was no saving Barcelona from a forgetful opening clash.

Next up is a trip to the Basque country to tackle Real Sociedad, who opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory on the road against Cadiz and will be encouraged by Barcelona s inability to get going.

Despite Barcelona s dominance in this fixture, it will be far from an easy encounter and the hosts will be keen to pile further pressure upon their Catalan opponents.

Real Madrid to keep Vinicius?

According to a recent report from Marca, Real Madrid do not consider Vinicius Junior to be someone that they are contemplating selling. Reports had previously indicated that he could be leaving Real on some kind of loan deal during the upcoming January transfer window, which opened the door for Paris Saint-Germain who were also believed to be considering some kind of permanent deal, too.

He’s still incredibly young and has a long way to go in this game, but at the very least, Real appear to be in a position whereby they are willing to keep him on the books and invest in his development.

This could all be nothing more than smoke and mirrors in order to try and increase his price tag even further, but even with that being the case, fans around the world have alrea…

Saint-Etienne hit for six and reduced to eight men in club-record defeat

Saint-Etienne suffered a club-record loss and became just the second Ligue 2 team to have three players sent off in a single match as they were thrashed 6-0 by Le Havre.

One of France s historically most successful clubs, Saint-Etienne were relegated from Ligue 1 last season, with their misery compounded by a points deduction.

They had opened their season with two draws and one defeat, but were humbled on Saturday.

Saint-Etienne had three players sent off, with two of those dismissals coming in the first half. Anthony Briancon picked up two bookings in the space of four minutes, and Mathieu Cafaro received his marching orders soon after.

It was the first time Saint-Etienne had received two red cards in the first half of a league match in the 21st century…

´It´s all just come together´ – Tierney hails Arsenal unity following flying start

Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney believes the unity that has characterised the Gunners flying start to the new season has been years in the making under Mikel Arteta.

Sunday s thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool at Emirates Stadium ensured Arsenal moved back to the top of the Premier League, where they lead Manchester City by a solitary point after nine games.

The Gunners have won eight of their opening nine games in a top-flight campaign for just the fourth time in their history, having also done so in the 1947-48, 2004-05 and 2007-08 seasons.

Meanwhile, the last time Arsenal led the Premier League at a later stage of the season was on December 10, 2016, when they did so after 15 games.

Arsenal s form represents quite the turnaround for Arteta, who has co…

Messi slams Barcelona for ´kicking out´ Suarez

Lionel Messi has slammed Barcelona for kicking out his close friend Luis Suarez after the Uruguay striker sealed a move to Atletico Madrid.

Barca this week let Suarez leave for Atletico in a €6million deal, with new head coach Ronald Koeman having told him he was surplus to requirements.

Koeman s treatment of the former Liverpool star was believed to be one of the motivating factors behind Messi s desire to force a sensational exit from Camp Nou, but he said president Josep Maria Bartomeu made a move impossible by going back on his word to let him leave for free.

Suarez is the third-highest scorer in Barcelona s history with 198 goals and won 13 trophies, including four LaLigas and the 2014-15 Champions League, during a six-year spell with the Catalan giants.

Roy Keane and Daniel Sturridge argue over Virgil van Dijk statement after goalless draw between Liverpool and Manchester United (Video)

Liverpool completely dominated the game against arch-rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday, and still failed to get a win. Speaking after the match, Reds captain Virgil van Dijk said that there was only one team that played this game to win, and that the visitors were buzzing about the point they took.

United legend Roy Keane took exception to the Dutch centre-back s words and labeled them as arrogance, while former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge took a more reasonable approach and defended his ex teammate.

That s arrogance.
It s not arrogance!

Bayern prioritise new number nine amid Kane and Osimhen links as Hainer laments lack of goals

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel has been promised a new striker for next season after president Herbert Hainer accepted the team lacks a ruthless goalscorer.

A 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Wednesday saw Bayern exit the Champions League 4-1 on aggregate at the quarter-final stage.

They are in danger of being left behind as the likes of big-spending City make a concerted effort to push for European dominance.

Although Bayern saw off another wealthy pretender to the Champions League crown in the previous round, by sinking the hopes of Paris Saint-Germain, there have been obvious shortcomings in the German giants ranks this season.

This might be largely because they sold Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona last July and did not recruit a player of the sam…
